Hamburg Port Information

Even though it is about 70 miles (110 km) from the coast on the river Elbe, the Port of Hamburg is considered a sea port since it is able to handle large ocean-going ships. It is the largest port in Germany, the third-largest in Europe (after the Port of Antwerp and Rotterdam), and the eighth largest in the world. Dating back to 1189, the Port of Hamburg celebrates its anniversary on 7th May with an annual festival.
There are two cruise terminals in the Port of Hamburg: the ‘Cruise Terminal Grasbrook’ in the HafenCity and the new ‘Cruise Terminal Altona’. The new terminal caters for the increasing popularity for cruise liners at the Port of Hamburg and was opened in the summer of 2009. Altona is an attractive location for passengers due to its close proximity to the city centre.
